The holidays are over and most of us are back at work. You’ve probably ticked off a long list of “fresh start” jobs for the new year, clearing your inbox, organising your desk and setting goals for 2026.
One thing that’s often overlooked? Workplace first aid.
If you’re responsible for health and safety, now is the ideal time to make sure your first aid setup is compliant, up to date and ready to respond. Below are our top three tips for getting workplace first aid right in 2026.
Tip 1: Audit your first aid kit
Now is the perfect time to give your first aid kit a proper audit.
According to Safe Work Australia’s first aid in the workplace code of practice, first aid kits should be audited at least every 12 months or after each use. Not sure where to start? Our workplace first aid audit guide has you covered.
You might be thinking, “No one used the kit last year. There were no accidents, so it’s fine.” While that could be true, keep in mind that first aid supplies do expire and may no longer be suitable in an emergency. Someone may also have used the kit without your knowledge or it may have been tampered with, requiring replenishment.
Regular checks ensure your kit is always ready to respond when needed.

Tip 2: Review the number of employees in your workplace
Another key factor in workplace first aid compliance is the number of employees in your workplace.
You may have had staff leave throughout 2025 or taken on more employees for the new year. It’s important to review your current headcount, as this will dictate what type and how many first aid kits you need by law.
Small office settings may only require one kit, while larger workplaces may require multiple kits and possibly defibrillators or a dedicated first aid room.
Tip 3: Don’t forget your work vehicles
Workplace vehicles are often forgotten when it comes to first aid compliance.
Regardless of whether you manage a fleet of company vehicles or operate a single work vehicle, the July 2019 WHS code of practice specifies that a portable first aid kit should be provided in the vehicle of mobile workers if that vehicle is their workplace.
