Frequently Asked Questions
What has changed from AS 4031-1992 to AS 23907:2023?
The newer AS 23907:2023 standard introduces significantly higher safety requirements compared to AS 4031-1992. Key changes include increased puncture resistance (from approximately 12.5 N to 20 N), the requirement for a permanent non-reopenable locking mechanism once sealed, and improved overall safety and durability standards. These updates represent a major uplift in safety performance.
Do sharps containers need to be certified to AS 23907:2023?
No. In Australia, there are currently no laws, regulations, or codes of practice that explicitly require third-party certification to AS 23907:2023. Australian Standards are not mandatory unless referenced in legislation, and even then, they typically require compliance rather than certification.
Do sharps containers need to comply with AS 23907:2023?
While not legally required in all cases, it is considered best practice for sharps containers to comply with AS 23907:2023, as it reflects the latest safety and performance requirements.
What is the difference between compliance and certification?
Compliance means a product is designed and tested to meet the requirements of a standard. Certification means a third party has independently verified and documented that compliance. In most Australian workplaces, compliance is expected, while certification is only required if specified by regulation, contract, or internal policy.
Are FastAid sharps containers certified to AS 23907:2023?
No. FastAid sharps containers are not certified to AS 23907:2023. They are designed in line with previous standards such as AS 4031-1992 but may not meet all updated requirements of the newer standard, including permanent non-reopenable closure or increased puncture resistance. This is suitable for most workplaces, as certification is not typically required unless specific legislation, regulations, or internal workplace policies mandate it.
Are all sharps containers able to meet AS 23907:2023?
No. Some older or lower-specification designs may not meet the updated requirements, particularly containers without permanent locking lids, products that do not achieve the higher puncture resistance, or designs that can be reopened after closure.
How do I know if a product is suitable for my workplace?
You should confirm whether your organisation, regulator, or contract requires compliance or certification to AS 23907:2023. It is also important to ensure the product meets your safety expectations, including secure closure and adequate puncture resistance.
